This week, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) featured Union County Public Schools for our practice of serving locally-sourced beef in our school cafeterias. Since 2022, we’ve been proud to partner with S&P Family Farms right here in Union County to allow our students to receive fresh, minimally processed beef that is locally raised. The USDA hopes more schools across the country will follow our lead to bring locally-produced foods to their school cafeterias.
We’re also proud to partner with other local vendors like Cates Farm for pumpkins, gourds, and watermelon and Windy Hill Farm for jalapenos, snack peppers, cherry tomatoes, cantaloupe, honeydew, fresh lettuce, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumbers, and the most amazing and fun yellow and orange watermelon. The students love the variety and colors!
Our school district’s food service department and our local vendors are all members of the Kentucky Proud program, celebrating products that are raised, grown, manufactured, or processed in Kentucky by Kentuckians. We’re thankful for these wonderful partnerships that give our students an opportunity to experience fresh beef, fruits, and vegetables and see the variety that our local ecosystem has to offer.
