Classroom Spotlight: Colonists, Candy, and Curious Learning!

History came to life today in Ms. Riedell’s fifth grade class! As part of their “Road to the American Revolution” unit, students stepped into the shoes of American colonists to experience the sting of "taxation without representation" firsthand.

While some students took on the roles of King George and Parliament, others worked hard for their "paychecks" of M&M’s —only to watch their earnings dwindle at the hands of royal tax collectors without a say. It wasn’t long before the room felt the same frustration that fueled a revolution!

The activity concluded with a powerful reflection session, where students connected their personal frustration over lost candy to the historical grievances of the American colonists.

Through this "sweet" simulation, our students didn't just read about history; they felt the tension that built a nation.  What a prime example of “curious learning” - one of our essential qualities of Building a Brave!

And don’t worry … in today’s activity, everyone got to enjoy some tasty M&M’s in the end!
