The Kentucky Legislature recently passed Senate Bill 181, a measure that changes how school employees are allowed to communicate with students. The bill creates a new section of KRS 160 directing each board of education to designate one or more programs or applications as a traceable communication system that shall be the exclusive means for school district employees and volunteers to communicate electronically with students. Unauthorized communication now includes personal email accounts, text messaging, social media, or other electronic notification and communication programs outside of the traceable communication system. The new law goes into effect on Friday, June 27, 2025.
