This Saturday evening, we were honored to induct four individuals and two teams into the Union County High School/United Community Bank Athletic Hall of Fame.  The 2023 Hall of Fame Class consists of Caleb Ervin, Clarissa Houston, Duncan McCormick, Jarrad Rudd, 1976-77 boys’ basketball team, and the 1998 state championship boys’ track team.

Caleb Ervin

Caleb Ervin

Caleb is a 2011 graduate of Union County High School. He wrestled for the Braves from 2008-2011 with a remarkable career record of 193 wins and only 5 losses. He led the Braves to four KHSAA regional titles and two KHSAA team state titles. Throughout his high school career Caleb dominated the competition, recording falls over 129 opponents. Caleb was a 2009 NHSCA National Champion, where he won the award for most falls in the least amount of time. He was a four-time KHSAA Region One champion and a three-time KHSAA state champion. In Caleb's senior season, he led the Braves to both KHSAA region and state titles.

He was voted the KHSAA State Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Caleb was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler in 5 of the 6 tournaments he competed in that season and was ranked in the top 6 best wrestlers in the country in his weight division. He was awarded the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award, which is given by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame to only eight wrestlers in the country each year. Caleb was also selected to the Tom Leach All Resilient Team and was chosen by the Athletic Director’s Association as the Male Athlete of the Year for the Second Region. He was also awarded the Earle C. Clements Award for outstanding leadership in academic achievement and athletic excellence.

Coach Robert Ervin said that in his 21 years of coaching he had never coached a wrestler who competed as hard as Caleb. His goal was not just to win but to dominate his opponents as much as he possibly could.

Caleb went on to wrestle at the University of Illinois where he was awarded First Team Freshman All-American honors. He wrestled for the Illini for three seasons and was a two-time Big Ten Championship podium placer and a one-time NCAA national tournament qualifier before finally retiring with career-ending injuries.

“I am proud to be part of the stepping stones that paved the way for what is possible at Union County Wrestling,” he reflected.  “I would like to thank all my teammates and coaches for pushing him and instilling the values of hard work, community, and continuous self-growth. The lessons taught by being part of Union County wrestling are lessons that I will carry on throughout my life. I will continue to be grateful for the incredible dynasty of wrestling created in this small rural community of Union County.”
