Sturgis Elementary School

 Hall Dear SES Families,

Welcome to Sturgis Elementary! We are a Preschool – 5 school that serves approximately 430 students. We still do our BEST at Sturgis Elementary…(B- Be Responsible, E-Everyone show Respect, S- Stay Positive, T- Try Your Best) However, this year you will also hear your child talk about the seven habits. This summer our staff attended a four day professional development training to learn how we can incorporate the seven habits in our school which can also carry over into your child’s everyday life.  We believe the success of our school is due to the participation, talent, and hard work of our students, staff, parents, and community.

Our school is committed to developing and delivering awell-rounded educational program for all its students. We believe this includes rigorous academics, attention to individual student talents, and an effective partnership between home and school.

Sturgis Elementary is now a “Leader in Me” School where students are taught and practice the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. The Leader in Me program empowers young people to make positive, effective, and responsible choices  by introducing and reinforcing the 7 Habits, a set of leadership and life skills from Stephen Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. These habits are:

1. Be proactive - take responsibility and initiative.

2. Begin with the end in mind -plan and set goals.

3. Put first things first - set priorities and practice discipline.

4. Think Win-Win - consider others and seek alternatives to conflict.

5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood - listen to others, learn from their views.

6. Synergize - value others'strengths and team with others to solve problems.

7. Sharpen the Saw - taking care of the self, learning, and finding meaning outside of school.

When taught and practiced in a PreK – 5 school environment, these 7 Habits have been proven to improve academic engagement, comprehension, and performance by strengthening individual work habits and improving social interactions. They help improve student performance and support school successby helping to foster the qualities of independence (goal-setting, organization, time management, and planning); interdependence (teamwork, conflict management, creativity, and analytical skills); and renewal (fun, desire to learn, and goodhealth & hygiene).

The staff of Sturgis Elementary has made the commitment to model and implement the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in order to provide a caring and nurturing learning environment for our students. Teaching students and developing leaders is what we do! Through the teaching of the 7 habits, our staff is working together with students to create a school that maintains the dignity of children through productive interactions while fostering positive relationships with parents and other community members.

We welcome you to Sturgis Elementary School.  Please feel free to contact me by email, michelle.hall@union.kyschools.us and/ortelephone 333-4088.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Michelle Hall, Principal
